You know you are having a good week when someone you admire, respect and look up to honor’s you with a nomination for the Sunshine Blogger Award! I am so touched and flattered that my friend Amy Lynn Kennedy of Your Favorite Chapter and IG @yourfavoritechapter, even considered me for this wonderful award given from bloggers to fellow bloggers who inspire creativity and positivity by bringing sunshine to the blogging community.
I first met Amy in person at the FierceCon 2018 conference in Hermosa Beach, CA. This was the first time I had attended this kind of conference and I didn’t know a single person. The minute I met Amy I felt like we had known each other for years. She is warm, friendly, funny and smart. Your Favorite Chapter is the blog I go to on Tuesday’s for great home cooked recipes and on Friday, fun fashion finds. Reading Amy’s blog is like sitting down with a good friend, get a cup of hot coffee or tea and get ready to enjoy your visit!
Currently Amy is recovering from a nasty fall and surgery on a shattered ankle. She has a lot of hardware holding her ankle together and has been the best sport in the world about it. She radiates positivity in everything she does and I am honored to call her a friend, after all how can you not love somebody who one of her favorite sayings is “Oh my stars…..”?
The questions Amy put forth for me are as follows:
Tell us a little about you and how you chose to become a blogger.
I am a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, business owner and wanna be world hiker. Like the majority of women who have reached their 50’s I’m finally at a place in my life that I have a little more time to focus on myself and pursue some of the things I have always wanted to do. I’m committed to living my life with a sense of adventure and joy.
When I was looking for inspiration for travel, fashion or hiking, I didn’t see a lot of women my age being represented on social media. I decided to act as my own inspiration. I just went for it, followed my own path and delved into the world of blogging and Instagram.
When I started, I was advised to stick to just one topic. Of course, I didn’t listen. I think part of my blog is showing that women can have a lot of interests. I happen to like fashion, traveling and hiking. Women are not one-dimensional, we are complex, I like to show how my interests intersect, and I post about them on my blog and IG page.
Your influence has had such a positive impact on so many women. Are there any dreams you have for other directions you might like to take your influence?
That’s a great question. First of all I’m thrilled that my blog has in someway inspired women to follow some of their dreams. One direction I would like to take my influence to would be to work on having the voices of women in midlife heard and paid attention to in marketing campaigns. The majority of advertising dollars are spent on millennial’s yet baby boomers have the highest disposable incomes. I want to help be an influencer to give women in midlife a stronger voice and to be paid attention to.
What advice would you give to a woman who feels her life is in a rut and she wants to change it up but doesn’t know where to start?
The first thing I would tell them is pat yourself on the back, you have made it this far and have learned a lot of life lessons and are tougher then you realize. The second thing I would advise them is to think back to the things you enjoyed doing before you had a family, major financial obligations and a job that demanded most of your time.
Give yourself permission to spend some time doing what you enjoyed. Painting? Reading? Traveling? Physical activities? Whatever it is, make time for it and let a new journey begin. For me it was learning to hike. I was absolutely terrible when I started and it took months for me to make it up the mountain near my house. I took it slow and I learned to enjoy the journey of just doing it. In other words, its ok to start with little steps and see where the path leads you.
What are three bucket list items you want to include in your life story?
- I want to hike through Iceland next summer to begin the “year of celebration” for my 60th birthday.
- Become a social media affiliate for a few fashion brands that celebrate women in midlife
- Act as a mentor to younger women to show them that getting older is full of opportunities to become your more authentic self. We are a youth obsessed culture and until women really begin to celebrate this stage of our lives younger women will fear the aging process. I want to lead by example and show them that they will get better, stronger, smarter and have fun. Life is a beautiful adventure!
My List of Nominees are:
Mary V Downsize 365
I choose Mary because she is one of the most organized and positive women I know. I met Mary in Atlanta at the Influencers of Midlife Conference. She is the kind of friend we all need when we feel overwhelmed and need someone to help us feel more organized and in control of our lives. I love how she is can take the most complex problems and break them down into easy solutions. Secretly, I want her to come to my house and just reorganize everything! Be sure to check out her instagram page @downsize365 you will find daily tips and encouragement to declutter your lives and feel empowered.
I choose Heather because she is one of the smartest, most accomplished and down to earth women I know. I am constantly amazed by how she can reinvent herself and succeed at everything and I mean everything she does. She has been a successful attorney, business owner, best selling author of a cook book, and now is helping people find the financial freedom to follow their dreams. She is easy to relate to, has very practical advice and I promise you will learn some very important information. Her IG is @thefreedomstrategy and her videos are fantastic!
Lisa Harris, Midlife in Bloom
You know when you meet someone and feel like you have known them for years? That is exactly how I felt when I met Lisa. I had loved her IG @Midlifeinbloom and her blog long before I actually met her. Her sense of style is what originally drew me to her but her heart and ability to relate to issues that women in midlife go through are what made me a devoted follower of her blog. Lisa is the kind of friend that you meet for lunch and the next thing you know, your sides hurt from laughing, you share life stories and over 3 hours have flown by. I am so lucky that she is a frequent visitor to Arizona, we have a lot more lunches to plan!
